Chapter Ten
Emma was trembling inside and out. She didnât dare pick up the spoon when the waitress set a bowl of soup in front of her. The door of the café was all the way across the crowded room. She had appreciated that when theyâd sat down. It wasnât as if anyone would recognize her, but ever since heâd come home, sheâd felt as if Aunt Jill would find her at some point. Sheâd felt that way at the store, too, but heâd made shopping so fun, she had momentarily forgotten her fears.
Not now.
They were back tenfold.
Aunt Jill was the one whoâd wanted the marriage between Martha and George. That made what had happened even worse.
âWh-what about North Country Logging?â she finally asked. âWho will take over there when the time comes?â
âIâm not sure, but Weston Lumber will continue working with them, do whatever we can to assist them now and when the time comes.â
Now it gets even worse. It was more than just a broken engagement between him and Martha. Because of her, the future of North Country Loggingâher motherâs familyâs companyâhad been affected.
Emma glanced towards the door again, questioning if she could make an escape, but her thoughts momentarily shifted as she recognized a man walking towards their table.
âThatâs Willis,â she said.
George turned and greeted the man as he arrived at their table. âHello, Willis.â
âExcuse me, sir,â Willis said before he turned to her. âMiss.â Addressing George again, the chauffeur continued, âYour attendance is requested at home immediately.â
âIs there something wrong?â George asked.
âIs Beverly all right?â Emma asked. Thatâs where her mind had gone when sheâd recognized Willis.
âMrs. Buttons is perfectly fine,â Willis assured her. âYour attendance is required as well, miss.â
âMe? Why?â
âIâm sure itâs about the event my mother is planning,â George said. He then nodded at Willis. âWeâll be along shortly. Thank you.â
âVery well, sir.â Willis nodded at her again. âMiss.â He then pivoted and walked away.
âWhat event?â Emma asked, trembling even harder. Aunt Jill could have been at the lunch and Beverly might have accidently said something.
âRemember the tree you wrote about in your letters last Christmas?â he asked.
She nodded. It had been a huge evergreen that had been set up in the park by the skating rink and people had tied ribbons with the names of soldiers on it as a signal of sending Christmas well-wishes overseas. She had written his name on one and tied it to a branch. So had Beverly.
âMy mother arranged to have that tree set up and plans on having another one put up this year. Thatâs what her brunch was about today. I told her last night that Iâd go find a tree for her this weekend, and if I was to guess, Iâd say that Beverly told her about your scarves and mittens, and Mother is interested in learning more. Iâd also guess that Beverly informed Willis where he could find you. He knew I was going shopping this morning, too, and lucked out seeing my car out front and in finding us together.
