Chapter Ten

Emma was trembling inside and out. She didn’t dare pick up the spoon when the waitress set a bowl of soup in front of her. The door of the café was all the way across the crowded room. She had appreciated that when they’d sat down. It wasn’t as if anyone would recognize her, but ever since he’d come home, she’d felt as if Aunt Jill would find her at some point. She’d felt that way at the store, too, but he’d made shopping so fun, she had momentarily forgotten her fears.

Not now.

They were back tenfold.

Aunt Jill was the one who’d wanted the marriage between Martha and George. That made what had happened even worse.

“Wh-what about North Country Logging?” she finally asked. “Who will take over there when the time comes?”

“I’m not sure, but Weston Lumber will continue working with them, do whatever we can to assist them now and when the time comes.”

Now it gets even worse. It was more than just a broken engagement between him and Martha. Because of her, the future of North Country Logging—her mother’s family’s company—had been affected.

Emma glanced towards the door again, questioning if she could make an escape, but her thoughts momentarily shifted as she recognized a man walking towards their table.

“That’s Willis,” she said.

George turned and greeted the man as he arrived at their table. “Hello, Willis.”

“Excuse me, sir,” Willis said before he turned to her. “Miss.” Addressing George again, the chauffeur continued, “Your attendance is requested at home immediately.”

“Is there something wrong?” George asked.

“Is Beverly all right?” Emma asked. That’s where her mind had gone when she’d recognized Willis.

“Mrs. Buttons is perfectly fine,” Willis assured her. “Your attendance is required as well, miss.”

“Me? Why?”

“I’m sure it’s about the event my mother is planning,” George said. He then nodded at Willis. “We’ll be along shortly. Thank you.”

“Very well, sir.” Willis nodded at her again. “Miss.” He then pivoted and walked away.

“What event?” Emma asked, trembling even harder. Aunt Jill could have been at the lunch and Beverly might have accidently said something.

“Remember the tree you wrote about in your letters last Christmas?” he asked.

She nodded. It had been a huge evergreen that had been set up in the park by the skating rink and people had tied ribbons with the names of soldiers on it as a signal of sending Christmas well-wishes overseas. She had written his name on one and tied it to a branch. So had Beverly.

“My mother arranged to have that tree set up and plans on having another one put up this year. That’s what her brunch was about today. I told her last night that I’d go find a tree for her this weekend, and if I was to guess, I’d say that Beverly told her about your scarves and mittens, and Mother is interested in learning more. I’d also guess that Beverly informed Willis where he could find you. He knew I was going shopping this morning, too, and lucked out seeing my car out front and in finding us together.
